Peter and John were on their way to church and found a crippled man. They stopped and ministered to him. They weren't too busy to help him. This is chaplaincy at its best. We often times find ourselves in a place to meet a need that we didn't realize we were going to be in. But they were ready to do so. That is how we have to be: READY. It is the Rapid Response Team's Motto and in fact all of HWI's motto: "Semper Peratis" which is Latin for "Always Prepared." That is what we are to be. Blessings! Kerry
Acts 3 (Amplified Bible)
Acts 3
1NOW PETER and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour (three o'clock in the afternoon),
2[When] a certain man crippled from his birth was being carried along, who was laid each day at that gate of the temple [which is] called Beautiful, so that he might beg for charitable gifts from those who entered the temple.
3So when he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked them to give him a gift.
4And Peter directed his gaze intently at him, and so did John, and said, Look at us!
5And [the man] paid attention to them, expecting that he was going to get something from them.
6But Peter said, Silver and gold (money) I do not have; but what I do have, that I give to you: in [the [a]use of] the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk!
7Then he took hold of the man's right hand with a firm grip and raised him up. And at once his feet and ankle bones became strong and steady,
8And leaping forth he stood and [b]began to walk, and he went into the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God.
Scriptures:
Acts 1 (Amplified Bible)
Acts 1
1IN THE former account [which I prepared], O Theophilus, I made [a continuous report] dealing with all the things which Jesus began to do and to teach(A)
2Until the day when He ascended, after He through the Holy Spirit had instructed and commanded the apostles (special messengers) whom He had chosen.
Commentry:
Theophilus is the name of a person or an honorary title to whom the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles are addressed (Luke 1:3, Acts 1:1). Most scholars agree that both Luke and Acts were originally written in Koine Greek, and that "θεόφιλος" ("Theophilos"), as it appears therein, means friend of God[1] or (be)loved by God or loving God[2] in the Greek language. No one knows the true identity of Theophilos and there are several conjectures and traditions around an identity. In English Theophilos is also written "Theophilus", both a common name and an honorary title among the learned (academic) Romans and Jews of the era. Their life would coincide with the writing of Luke and the author of Acts, sometime between 60-110 AD, depending on which tradition one subscribes to.
My Comments:
The Chaplaincy is the only ministry that legally interfaces with our government and in fact mandatorily is paid by our government in many cases and supercedes the current "Separation of Church and State" philosophy that permeates our governmental philosophy and policy. Theophilus is a Roman governmental bureaucrat to whom Dr. Luke also wrote the Gospel of Luke, actually a letter as the Book of Acts is also.
